Job Summary: Uses histological techniques to prepare tissue sections for examination and diagnosis by Pathologists.

Hours: M-F/9:30am-5:30pm (Rotating Weekends)
Job Essentials: The ideal candidate will meet the following requirements and competencies.
- Uses laboratory equipment to process tissue. Cuts thin histological sections and mounts tissue sections on glass microscope slides. Fixes, stains and cover slips slides.
- Demonstrates tissue elements by routine staining with qualitative values.
- Demonstrates complex tissue elements by using various special stains.
- Prepares frozen sections for Pathologists’ immediate review using a cryostat.
- Prepares X-rays on tissue when necessary.
- Carries out maintenance on instruments. Changes solutions and stains as needed.
- Prepares staining solutions.
- Carries out quality control procedures.
- Logs patient specimens in logbook accurately and legibly. Makes sure all work is completed within turn-around time guidelines.
- Uses hospital computer to register specimens, order tests and place charges.
- Demonstrates skill and accuracy in labeling slides and containers, and completing all paperwork necessary for tissue preparation.
- Prepares tissue and paperwork for reference laboratories.
- Evaluates problems and alerts supervisor as necessary.
- Files tissue blocks and slides for future retrieval.
- Maintains a high level of quality and safety. Disposes waste products according to hospital standards.
- Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information.
- Meets regulatory and annual health assessment requirements.
- Displays a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude during interactions with all members of the hospital staff and extended community.
- Maintains high standards of service excellence in all interactions with patients, physicians, other departments and co-workers.
- Performs other duties as required by department
- Ability to perform complex histological techniques in a high pace environment.
Education Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Some College preferred.
