Job Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Chief Clinical Dietitian, coordinates and integrates clinical aspects of dietetics to provide nutritional support to patients requiring parenteral/enteral nutrition. Responsible for gathering parameters involved in calculating the patient's metabolic profile. Functions as an active member of the nutrition support team.

Job Essentials:

- Provides nutritional care and counseling to patients. Reviews medical records, interviews the patients and or family, assesses the appropriateness of current nutritional care, and advises of necessary changes.
- Assists the medical house-staff in gathering anthropometric measurements; calculating and recording nutritional status parameters; defining the metabolic profile and caloric and protein intake.
- Assists in developing enteral/parenteral formulary.
- Provides in-house education in the area of enteral nutritional support for medical, nursing and pharmacy staff.
- Teaches nutritional assessment and support to rotating physicians and medical students and house staff.
- Monitors and coordinates the patients for initiation and weaning of parenteral nutrition and enteral nutrition as assigned
- Assists in the formulation of policies and procedures of the nutrition support service.
- Calculates tube feeding; directs the food service staff to ensure the proper item and quantity are sent to nursing.
- Charts the pertinent information in the patient's medical record. Responsible for maintaining accurate clinical records and ensuring the proper documentation of care.
- Demonstrates complete understanding of all policies and procedures concerning the responsibilities of a dietitian all aspects of nutritional care and meal service.
- Develops personal nutritional knowledge and skills and shares knowledge and training with fellow dietitians and other staff members.
- Develops, updates and revises policies, procedures, nutrition education materials, forms and relevant materials as needed.
- Presents new and relevant information to department staff, and suggests new products or services for review.
- Performs the assigned nutritional in-service education program, based on JCAHO and state standards. Serves as a resource person for the medical and nursing staff in nutritional and clinical dietetics.
- Assists in coordinating, directing, and participating in O/P counseling service as needed.
- Monitors the patients assigned for nutrition problems such as dysphasia, patients with poor intake, patients NPO for longer than 72 hours, and other nutritional high-risk patients according to EHMC established guidelines.
- Assist in assigned patient meal plans according to the latest RDA guidelines of the National Research Council
- Conducts incident investigations; completes and processes the proper documentation forms. Communicates findings to the Chief Clinical Dietitian and department director and all other appropriate persons
- Supervises and trains students and volunteers assigned.
- Responds to the food complaints from the assigned patients; resolves problems and works to ensure customer satisfaction.
- Functions as active member of the Nutrition Support Team.
- Performs additional duties assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Foods and Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition or related area
- Registered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration
- Certified in Nutrition Support
- Master's degree preferred
- Must have the ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
- Must possess the ability to understand and react effectively to the unique nutritional needs of patients of all ages as attained through educational training, continuing education or experience.
- Ability to communicate with patients, patient's family, dietary, medical and nursing personnel and outside agencies
- Ability to move about the hospital; interview patients at bedside, walk half the day.
- Computer skills as deemed necessary to perform work duties.
